12 3 4 5 Hi-5

I showed a 3 or 4-year-old girl, who doesn't speak any English how to do Hi-5 today. We did talk of course, in Mandarin, and together we drew Winnie The Pooh, Tigger and an elephant in my small notebook (which always comes in handy in any type of situations).

Oh, our conversation started with my pink bag (she later brought out her blue colour bag), moving on to her breakfast and mine, and finally I asked her whether she recognised the Aussie group of five, Hi-5, who was in Kuala Lumpur recently for a sneak peek show before their Holiday Tour in the capital from Sept 14-16. She did not recognise them. Reading Sunday's newspaper, I decided that every child in every nook of the world (including a small state like Perlis) should recognise them, and hence the need to announce the famous sign of Hi Five beckoned and begged me to teach it to this lovely child.

That was not the only reason. Personally, I love watching Hi-5 shows. I suppose the show is entertaining, educational, intellectually stimulating and a good warm-up activity to show to children before a lesson. It is also a curricular-thematically presented programme presenting knowledge in very exciting and simple ways.

Nowadays, I'm collecting the DVDs from any outlets/departmental stores and downloading the series from YouTube too. Currently, I'm using it for my tuition students who love the reward after an hour lesson or as an introductory presentation before a discussion topic session.

At the end of the day, the children and I enjoy Hi-5! and you should too...
