One thing I promise myself that I must do once I have finished reading 'What Should I Do With My Life' and 'Fire Your Boss' books, is to start reading on the famous Tim Ferris’s book “The 4-Hour Workweek”, in which he talked about Mini-Retirement.
Mini-retirement is basically to have an extended break from the usual career or 9-5 job, and one of the main purposes is to act as a 'reset button' in the midst of switching career or work.
There are a few things to take note when venturing into a mini-retirement:
- Save up beforehand- This is to make sure you have enough money to pay any loans or insurance during the income drought months.
- Unplug- Stop responding to emails and voicemails, and start to talk to real human. Make connections face-to-face rather than through tweeter, facebook or any other social medias.
- Get outside your comfort zone- Experience and become absorbed in another culture in another country. Slow down and resist from speeding up things in life.
- Set a goal- Expand your skills now, and try new things or hobbies. Fill up the empty time during mini-retirement with meaningful activities.
- Determine the next phase of career- If you must plan, this is the time to reflect and strategize as well as access your next step in life, when you come out from retirement.
